A Fish Taco Reunion

I may have mentioned once or twice that I am a California native. When we moved to Texas 2 years ago, I desperately missed my favorite restaurant… Wahoo’s Fish Tacos.

Most Texans I meet have never heard of Fish Tacos, and wrinkle their nose at the very thought. But let me tell you, they are delicious!

There happens to be one Wahoo’s in the entire state of Texas– in Austin. So, on the way back from San Antonio on Sunday, you know where we had lunch!

One very happy Mommy!

My typical order: A “#2″, one fish taco, one cheese enchilada.
No Tex-Mex here, note the soft corn tortilla, white rice, and black beans (Baja style)….mmm, good!

Actually, Wahoo’s is fairly frugal. The prices are reasonable, and the portions are generous. So, if you are ever in Austin, or SoCal, stop by Wahoo’s! Don’t worry, they have other items besides fish tacos, Texans.

That looked delicious!! I’m a native Texan, but we spent 8 yrs in Seattle and currently live in the D/FW area. I love fish tacos; I acquired the taste when we lived near the gulf coast in South Texas. (Shrimp also goes well in almost any Mexican food.) The biggest obstacle here in D/FW is the lack of freash seafood. Thanks for the recommendation!!

Alyssa,
I am a life long Texan and have never tried a fish taco! Have a friend who loves them! Will have to check this place out the next time we are in Austin, we don’t live far from there.
I got a chuckle at you this morning!
I was on WM watching your video about your coupon binder….that was you, right? You never showed your face but, I think it was you??
Anyway, I got tickled when you got the the ‘diaper’ section of the notebook and said something like, “I won’t be needing these much longer.”
Guess you were surprised, hugh?!

I am a native New Mexican. The first time I saw fish tacos was in San Diego. I can not bring myself to eat them. It just doesn’t fit my ‘mexican’ tastes. It sounds icky, looks icky, and just isn’t my thing! I do know of people, like yourself, who just love them. But I can’t do it.

Being from Alabama, we don’t eat fish tacos, but when I went to Hawaii a couple of years ago I tried them. They weren’t my favorite, but I would be more than willing to try it again.

Hi! I’m a Texan living in Colorado… along with lots of other Texans and Californians… and I was introduced to fish tacos here by way of Rubios! And I love them! But totally understand the Texan first impression of a fish taco! =) Glad to know I can still get them when we move back to Texas soon!

I've had real fish tacos one time and I still savor the taste. Now you have me hungry & craving them! I have to find a place here that makes them.

I still love Rubio’s best of all. Fortunately, there are a few in Colorado. We do have Wahoo’s but I wasn’t as impressed.

I was also one of those who thought fish tacos just sounded wrong. I wouldn’t eat them for YEARS. Now I love, love, love ‘em!!! :D

I love a fish taco, and up here in the midwest they are equally rare. We discovered how much we adore these in Hawaii and ate them about every day for lunch while we were there. Have been in constant pursuit of a good recipe ever since!

Well, I’m a native Texas, but have never liked fish. However, here in Fort Worth, right by Texas Christian University, we have Fuzzy’s Tacos (yes, I know, gross name!) and they have Baja-style fish tacos, but also have other great Baja-style tacos and white queso dip that I love!! So if you’re in DFW and don’t want to travel to Austin for fish tacos…oh, and they’re going to open one in “downtown” Arlington soon too!
