Keeping It Centsible: Frugal Tips & Tricks

February 24, 2009 · 2 comments

This week on Keeping It Centsible, our weekly podcast, Denise and I will be sharing our favorite frugal practices. I have shared many of my frugal ways here on my blog, but I am looking forward to chatting about frugality on the air.

We’ll be taking callers, and interacting in the chat room, my favorite part! Since being frugal means different things to different people, it will be interesting to hear other perspectives.

I believe that frugality starts in the home. If you do nothing else, take steps to conserve energy. Not only are you benefiting the environment, you are keeping money in your pocket!

Here is a sneak peek of one way I conserve energy:

The best way to improve your home’s heating and cooling efficiency is through insulation. If adding attic insulation is not an option, start small.

Last year, I covered every electrical outlet in our home with a pre-cut foam sealer. It was very simple. You simply remove the plastic cover with a screwdriver, insert the store-bought sealer, and reinstall the cover. Nothing is visible, but now when I hold my hand up to the outlet, I no longer feel cold air seeping in.

You can find outlet sealers at most hardware stores, and even at Walmart. They also make pre-cut covers that fit light switches.

This is a cheap and easy fix. I am pleased to report that our energy bills are pretty reasonable each month for a seven year old home in Texas. Just a few dollars were spent on my little home improvement project.

Tune in on Thursday night at 7pm CST to hear many more tips about frugality! To learn more about listening to shows on Blog Talk Radio, start here. Archives are always available on demand.
