Review & Giveaway: Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Home (now closed)

March 2, 2009 · 138 comments

This week’s giveaway is a delightful new book. Last week on Keeping It Centsible, I gave away 2 copies to live listeners who called in with frugal tips.

Congratulations to Erin and Brooke!

Good news… I have 3 more copies to give away to my wonderful readers! I don’t normally review books, however I jumped at the chance to get my hands on this one.

Mrs. Meyers Clean Home: No-nonsense advice that will inspire you to CLEAN like the DICKENS

Great timing! With 8 weeks until baby’s arrival, my nesting instinct is in full swing! Many of you may also be tackling spring cleaning projects. This book has some very helpful tips for those dreadful yearly jobs.

Best of all, Mrs. Meyers is a frugal mom of 9 children. Many of her cleaning tips and tricks are simple, old-fashioned remedies like vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.

I love the way this book is laid out. The categories and room-by-room guides are perfect for busy moms. You can simply flip to the section you need the most.

Here is a little about the book from the publisher:

When Thelma Meyer tells it to you, she tells it straight: Clean the kitchen daily! Don’t waste anything (not even the water leftover from those potatoes you just boiled)! Always work hard!

Now for the first time, Thelma’s sage advice is being made available in this revolutionary cleaning guide chock full of practical tips and secrets based on the premise that life is hectic and messy. With shortcuts and tips for cleaning the kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living room, MRS. MEYER’S CLEAN HOME contains unexpected advice such as:

–Never use vinegar and water on wood floors. One part dish soap and four parts water is the only way to truly get them clean. And remember to buff with a terrycloth towel.

–Always clean out the fridge before grocery shopping. Serve the kids “Musko” (“must go”) for dinner, using the items that were fast approaching expiration.
–Wash windows on a cloudy day to avoid the nasty streaking that happens when the sun’s out and glass dry too fast.

MRS MEYER’S CLEAN HOME is two parts common sense and one part inspiration. Read it and learn how to clean like the dickens.

As a fairly new subscriber thank you for all of your tips. My husband and I are getting back into using coupons and love to see how much we have saved. But, then I have to come home and clean the bathroom. Yuck!

I can’t stand to fold and put away laundry. In fact, I have a huge pile of clean laundry waiting for me on the couch!

Ugh, we have an elderly cat, and I absolutely hate cleaning the rug after she doesn’t quite make it to the potty. I love her to pieces, but I think someone needs to invent Depends for felines!

I really hate mopping, especially because the linoleum in my apartment kitchen has annoying seams in the middle.

For me, it’s the bathtub and shower. I can handle almost anything else with no problem as I actually love to clean, but the tub and shower just do me in. My husband usually chips in, but he tends to use a really strong cleaner that keeps us out of there for hours afterwards. And I’ve been looking for a resource exactly like this for awhile. I am currently pregnant with twins and in the hospital on bed rest, so I haven’t been able to do anything at home for a long while. I am looking forward to the mundane tasks once we get to come home :)

Mopping is the worst. I scrub too hard and my back and arms are sore by the end! After glancing at some comments, I was reminded how much I hate ironing as well. I need this book to inspire me! I am a clean freak at heart, but with 4 small children it is hard to keep up!

Thanks for the giveaway! The cleaning chores I hate the most are putting away laundry and having to clean hair out of a drain! Gag me!

The task I hate the most would be washing dishes. I have 3 boys and no dishwasher and it feels like there are always dishes to be washed.

Cleaning the kitchen and vacuuming the hair off the bathroom floor are my least faves!
White countertops are beautiful when clean, but inevitably dirty 5 mins later.
And I’m convinced that every time I push the vacuum out of the bathroom, a hair falls out of my head on the way, just to spite me!
Neverending tasks…

I dread cleaning the toilet—as a migraine sufferer for years the smell of a toilet clean or not makes me ill!

I can’t wait to read this book!
