It is officially Earth Day! Having just brought another little blessing into the world, I am especially conscious of my family’s impact on the environment.
Even the smallest changes in our lifestyles can make a difference! As a Christian, I feel it is especially important to be a good steward of our God-given resources.

This month, in conjunction with my role in the Walmart Elevenmoms, I had the opportunity to sample a handful of the “green products” Walmart carries in my home.
I am truly impressed by Walmart’s recent efforts in the sustainability department. They have really ramped up their selection of organic and eco-friendly products. Walmart is also our nation’s largest purchaser of locally grown produce, who knew?
Beyond that, the stores themselves have been updated with energy saving features, like skylights and LED lighting in the freezers, to name a few. You can read more about Walmart’s sustainability practices here.
I am thrilled to be able to offer a fabulous prize package of the green products I sampled to one lucky reader! But first, allow me to tell you a little about each item:
- Brita Water Pitcher- A wonderful alternative to buying bottled water. Saves money, and plastic!
- Tide Coldwater Laundry Detergent (not pictured)- I was pleasantly surprised to find this really got my clothes clean. Although I am not brave enough to try it on whites, it was quite effective on darker clothing.
- Clorox GreenWorks Cleaning Products- This new line of eco-friendly products was actually a Walmart driven initiative. Walmart likes to challenge its vendors to be more sustainable! The result was a very effective, less expensive “green” line of cleaners that really work. No harsh scents or chemicals!
- White Cloud “Green Earth” Paper Products- Made from 100% recycled fibers, the paper towels are just as effective as the regular ones. And the toilet paper? NOT scratchy!
- Bissel Little Green Deep Cleaner- This is by far my favorite of the bunch. I kid you not, within 24 hours of receiving this cute little steamer, our dog gave us the perfect opportunity to try it. And it worked, quite well! The carpet was soft after a thorough cleaning, not crunchy, and there was no harsh smell. We used it again the other night in fact, after one of my kiddos got sick on the carpet.

We recycle, but the coolest thing that we have done is to plant 3 hybrid poplar trees, they grow 5 – 8 feet per year & will help with cooling the house, using less power. They are a very frugal tree too, I get them through the Arbor Day website for less than $10.
We have started family recycling. We have all put for a effort to collect recyclables and prepare them for proper recycling and we have replaced our light bulbs with energy efficiant cfl’s.

It’s so hard to try and do it right… I use the greenworks cleaners and love them, and wash most loads of clothes in cold water… sheets i just have to wash in hot or warm at least though!! man its hard to try and be ‘green’ but quite fulfilling! We’ve been trying to remember to bring the reusable bags when doing the grocery shopping. We forget just often enough to have enough paper bags for the recycling (we’re required to put glass, cans and plastic in their own bags each week).
We use cloth diapers and cloth bar-mop type towels to wash hands and faces after meals instead of paper towels.
We also use the reusable grocery bags and save any we pick up here and there for trash cans, cleaning the litter box, etc.

Our family has started using power strips for all our tvs, and computer room. When we leave the room or house, we turn off the power strips. And we unplug everything that isn’t being used to save electricity. We also recycle.

Ooo, this is an easy one… We recycle, even though our city trash company doesn’t offer recycling service.
We compost all our scrap vegtbles, fruits, leaves, grass clippings, newspaper etc.
We use only reusable grocery bags at the stores and we rain water harvest and use that collected water for the garden.
Now that our little one is on the way we’ll be cloth diapering her! We do lots to live a greener life.

The biggest way we’re going green at my home is that we are renovating our kitchen green. We have tried to be more green (and frugal – funny how they often go hand in hand!) by eliminating paper use as much as possible – cloth diapers and napkins, washcloths instead of paper towels, real plates instead of paper. I also cut out most, ahem, “sanitary supplies” by using the Divacup.

Our little village does not offer recycling so I recycle all of our glass, plastic, paper and cans and cart them to the large recycle contanier in the center of the village. I reuse some of them for projects around the house if possible.

I am student and use whatever good paper I can get hold of (printed on just one side or with very little content, used envelopes, etc.) to create my own scribble pads that I use all the time. I am working on not forgetting to carry my recyclable totes when I go shopping.My husband has been carpooling to work for 2 years now.
I am a reusable tote fan! Besides being environmentally responsible, I feel like they keep my cold groceries chilled during the car ride home. I’ve also begun using collecting my “grey water”. When I run the tap, waiting for the water to heat up, I collect the cooler water in a big bowl, then I use it to water my roses.

Plastic bags were collecting quickly because I never had enough re-usable bags to carry all my groceries. So this year I have gotten more than enough re-usable bags – no excuses now! A few years ago, we started recycling and have kept it up. It’s so easy!

I recycle paper by taking it to a nearby drop off (we don’t have curbside service). I’ve started cleaning my tub with baking soda and the free-after-rebate-shampoo I get. I also try to use both sides of paper paper before recycling. In school, I have the students used the back side of printed paper to color or take practice tests.

Our family in an effort to save on electricity unplugs everything thing before we leave for the day. This saves on the electric bill considerably. People don’t realize that even though the appliance/tv is off it is still using energy. Unplugging everything really saves energy and money. Over the past year we have changed many things in order to live more green. I used to use paper towels for everything and would use a couple of rolls a week. Now I no longer buy paper towels instead I use old newspapers to wash my windows which works great and leaves no lint behind. I use old worn out socks for dusting rags and wash them. I have also installed CFL bulbs. We also have 3 huge trash barrel's that we recycle our glass, cans and plastic in. We have also changed out shower head to conserve on water. What a great review and giveaway! I have actually changed a lot of my wasteful ways over the last few months. Though it wasn’t originally an attempt to go green, it was more economical. I have started using energy efficient lightbulbs. I no longer use plastic bags–I love all my totes! I now have a new more efficient shower head and I am growing some veggies in containers this summer.

My husband is making the greatest sacrifice in all this! We have adjusted our thermostat! He is home all day with our youngest so he bares the brunt of the change. I’m at work wearing a sweater! I think he has it set at 76 degrees, which is hot for him! I’ve also been picking up all the free reusable totes for shopping. Now if I could just remember to take them into the store!

Whenever a bulb went out over the past year we have been replacing with the energy efficient one. Except when said on the clothes i wash all of the clothes in cold water. I use cloth bags whenever we go to the library.Its been on our to-do list to get energy efficient windows and on demand water heaters
It’s so funny to me that what everyone is calling “go green” and conserving and reduce/reuse is what us hillbillys (I live in rural TN) have been doing for years…I have not changed my way of living much because I was raised to be conscious of waste. We have always re-used/recycled/composted, hung clothes out to line dry even in the winter, used containers for packing meals (not throw away things), re-used clothes until they can’t be worn then cut them up for rags, used cloth napkins, conserved energy, planted gardens, and other things I cannot even think of, it’s just a habit here. It reminds me of stories of the Depression-era…now there were people who knew how to conserve!

Great eco friendly prizes, thanks so much! We tried to reduce the amount of electricity we use, by unplugging and not using lights unless necessary. We use household cleaning products that we can make ourselves, instead of buying store bought products filled with chemicals.
I’m trying to teach my girls to conserve energy. I regularly send them on “light patrol” and they go around turning off lights, tv’s, and other things that might have been left on.
My favorite it using vinegar water in a spray bottle instead of other cleaners for counters, windows, etc. It works great, is cheep, and is great for the environment.

To try and be more ‘earth-friendly’ I have changed our cleaning detergents to non-toxic and biodegradable. I have found a very nice selection here at our local grocer. It’s so easy to go green these days! We switched to the new lightbulbs both inside and out, we only use cloth bags and keep them in our cars so we always have them handy and we buy in bulk whenever possible to reduce waste.

Well, the thing I am most proud of is that I have started walking to places that I need to go instead of taking the car. I got a hiking backpack carrier for my 1 year old and I we both enjoy it immensely. We even take my 2 reusable shopping totes and walk to the grocery store. It started out a little difficult but I have been building strength and it has become much easier. I only use the car when it is absolutely necessary.

We have doing many many things but two examples are cloth diapers and recycling any cardboard that enters this house!
I haven’t bought paper towels in a year, and with a 1 year old, that’s quite the feat. We are also composting and growing a garden this year.

We use the reusable grocery bags (designed some for the Kroger bag contest, too!), use CFL light bulbs, recycle as much as waste management here will take, grow our own vegetables, conserve water as much as we can, and ride bikes rather than drive (in good weather). Notice these are also things that save money!

We use cloth diapers.
We recycle, compost, reuse containers and silverware in lunches, have CFLs, and use reusable bags for grocercy shopping! I also try to leave as many lights off as possible during the day, and I wash all colored clothes in cold water.

We have just started using organic product like stuff for my little girl and foods!
As a FAMILY.. we have committed to recycle! WE are ALL on board with That! WE have all stopped wasting water! We live in GA and the drought here has gotten so bad! WE KNOW that every DROP of water is precious. Hubby takes showers, turns off the water, lathers up, and then turns the water back on and finishes!
I’m not that brave. I have just cut my showers in HALF as has my daughter!
Laundry and Dishwasher are FULL LOADS ONLY (cold water for clothes)
Windows are open on nice days instead of AC.
Electrical appliances are NOT left on, and to be honest in this economy, who can afford to just throw $$ away. WE all need to conserve!!!
I NO longer drink Bottled water. I got a refillable bottle and guzzle that all day that saves all that plastic in the landfills. Shame on me!

We switched out our light bulbs to better energy saving GE ones (thanks to our handy dandy coupons) and we recently stocked up on reuseable bags. I LOVE them! I used to have the bags rip and tear and then I would have to put everything down to pick up everything that dropped. But I don’t have to worry about that with the resuseables! YAY! I think I got 8 in the past week!
We are eating out less- less money spent, less waste.

We went to all the energy saving light bulbs, reusable bags, turning off the water as we brush our teeth, rotating our tires so they last longer (less tires in landfills) there’s a few!

I try to turn off lights when not in use, and use rags instead of paper towels. Frugal and green!

I just found something recently that I love, and I am saving the environment at the same time. I have started using reusable sandwich and snack bags. They are made of cloth, and have a velcro closure. They are used just like a plastic sandwich bag, except they can be reused over and over again. I just shake out the crumbs every morning, and put the new sandwich in. They come in cute patterns as well, so the kids really accept them! kinggakong@yahoo.com

I forgot, we also bought refillable water bottles, instead of buying cases upon cases of bottled water every week. I got so tired of finding half drank water bottles around the house, and no one wanted to drink them because they didn’t know if they were theirs or not. Believe me, it was super frustrating! So, I purchased refillable water bottles, and just refill them every night. I store them in the fridge, and everyone can just grab one as they head out the door. Not only is this saving the environment, it is also saving my pocketbook. We have started a garden, we are composting and we planted trees this earth day.
I’m on oxygen and have a shower chair. I turn on the water, get wet, soap up and turn the water off. I scrub away and then turn the water back on to rinse off. I do the same thing when I wash was my hair. I recycle all I can, use a front loader washer, a low flush toilet and reuse zip lock type bags. Just a few of the ways I conserve.

I stocked up on reusable shopping bags, recycled the plastic ones, and changed old light bulbs to CFLs.
We reuse glass and plastic food containers and we have started to recycle cans.
we replaced all of our lightbulbs with low energy flourescents, we recycle now (didn’t before), and I’m switching to more ecological cleaners.
We are drinking tap water, no more plastic water bottles, and I have been using re-usable shopping bags for groceries!
We recycle everything we can, paper, plastics, cans, clothing, etc. We also use reusable bags for shopping. We have cut back on using paper towels and napkins too.

We are making big attempts at not being wastful of our purchases. Just because there is more in the stockpile, doesn’t mean we waste the open container!

We committed to going green in our house by setting up bins in our garage to recycle, turning off the lights,tvs when leaving the room, turning off the water while brushing our teeth, changed the ligh bulbs to moe energy effecient ones, wash our laundry in cold water, replaced our cleaning materials with eco friendly ones.

We recycle anything and everything we can both in the traditional sense and by using worn out clothes as rags for cleaning. We use reusable bags for shopping. We use brita filters instead of buying bottled water. We also carpool and have switched to a primarily vegetarian diet.

We swapped out our lightbulbs, use reusable shopping bags, turn off the lights when not needed, walk to the store for small trips instead of drive & have swapped all our cleaners for eco-cleaners (which I love even better than the conventional ones)!

We’re slowly adding new ways to “go green” all the time. My newest is switching to mainly cloth towels in the kitchen, working towards eliminating paper towels. I had some pretty flannel/terry cloth 12×12 towels made for kitchen spills and clean-ups.
Other ways include: cloth diapering, using “green” laundry detergent and dish soap, getting a reverse osmosis water system for the kitchen sink, and using cloth grocery bags whenever possible.

My favorite changes in our household to go green include using washable kitchen towels instead of paper towels and using vinegar/water instead of window/multi-purpose cleaners.
We are recycling, turning down the thermostat, and using less paper products.
We are using reusable shopping bags as much as I can remember, recycling, using safer cleaning products in the home, and removing all pthalates and parabens.

Love reusable bags. Especially Baggu they fit in my purse or pocket and are great for carrying everything.
We have done a few things such as no more paper plates. and now only using canvas bags no more plastics ones (excepy when we are running low i use these as tash bags for all the trashes except the kitchen and recyling cans. I am looking for better cleaners, even making my own, which I love becuase they are cheaper and work just as well.

we joined the local recycling program, we changed out light bulbs, we have unplugged things we weren’t using, we have started to use natural (handmade) cleaners – even did this with the girl scouts, and the girls loved having a cleaner for the windows/mirrors they made themselves.

As I read these comments,I realize that we do alot of those great earth saving acts. Things that haven't been posted yet that we've started doing is to wash out old ketchup&mustard bottles to store homemade sauces in,use plastic grocery bags for a poop scoop bag,and another use for old socks is to fill them with baking soda then tie it up and put in shoes that are in the closet to soak up any odors.
LOL,I think I am with most people that could use the little green mach. with the dog and two 3 yr. olds getting the house dirty every day:)
