Target: 5 Cent Credit for Reusable Bags

When you are focused on saving money, every penny counts. Now Target is jumping on the the bandwagon to offer its shoppers incentives for bringing their own shopping bags!

All Targets are now offering a 5 cent credit for each reusable bag you checkout with. Now you just have to remember to actually bring them into the store!

This is a relatively new program, so be sure to check your receipts. Word has it that you can use any reusable bag from any store, not just Target.

I am so happy to see more retailers making strides to reduce the use of plastic bags. Kroger has been doing this for some time, and CVS recently rolled out their version as well. I can only hope that Walmart is watching!

What other stores do you shop at where similar incentives are offered? I would love to hear!

I didn’t know Kroger gave credit. Our store has no advertisement as such.

Hi Jill,
Kroger does not really advertise it, but I would definitely mention it to the cashier at checkout if you bring your own bags. I have gotten a 5 cent credit for my bags for a couple years now.

I got my credit at Target the other day. It was a nice little perk!

How do you know that you actually get the credit??

D, it should be on your receipt. The cashier will scan a special bar code sticker that is on the wall of their station. Just watch to make sure they do so. If not, speak up!

I get a 5 cent credit at the Fred Meyer and 6 cent credit at WinCo Foods in Gresham, OR.
I am pretty sure I have recovered the cost of the bags by now!

The cashier at my local Target told me that I would only get credit for the Target brand reusable bags that I had. I don’t know if every Target is the same or not. Bummer.

My Target will credit you for any re-useable bag not just theirs. Also the Stop and Shop (Giant) gives a .05 credit for bringing your own bags (even the plastic ones sometimes).

Last time I was at Target I asked the cashier about bag credits and she had no idea what I meant.

CJ,
The news about the bags actually just went national this week, so it may take a while before all stores have it rolled out properly. If they don’t know next time, you might want to ask a manager about it.

I had no idea that Kroger offers incentives like that! I have been shopping at Kroger for a few years now, and always bring my own bags! I will mention it to someone next time! Thanks for the heads up!

I called 2 local Kroger’s and they said they stopped that program 2 years ago. :( It must be regional?

Well that’s a bummer! I figured it was all Krogers. Sorry about that Dian, and thanks for checking.
